If a person has 20% or more body fat deposits in his body, it is called obesity. The proportion of height and weight presented to determine overweight in adults is called body mass index or body mass index.

The word OBCT comes from the Latin word obicitus. Obicitus means ‘strong, thick or stout’ in Latin. The Oxford Dictionary notes that it was first used by Randall Cotgrave in 1611, in A Dictionary of the French and English Tongue.

Diseases that can be caused by obesity include coronary heart disease, type-2 diabetes, cancer (breast, colon), hypertension, stroke, liver and gallbladder disease, sleep apnea, osteo-arthritis, infertility, etc.

Obesity occurs when body fat accumulates due to genetic reasons.

Family lifestyle such as eating fatty fast food, not eating fruits, vegetables and refined carbohydrates, drinking alcoholic water; This is caused by eating appetisers before meals in expensive restaurants and fatty desserts after meals.

Problems caused by obesity

Being overweight is 77%  more likely to develop diabetes in men than 64% in women. Heart disease, myocardial infarction, heart failure, complications in pregnancy, menstrual disorders, infertility, various types of cancer, osteoarthritis type-2 diabetes, respiratory disorders etc.

Average human life expectancy is reduced by 6-7 years. High blood pressure, high blood cholesterol and high triglyceride levels.  Decreased insulin response. Blood sugar becomes uncontrolled.

Obesity has the potential to cause physical and mental health problems. In addition to the main problem, several other problems appear, such as metabolic syndrome or cardiovascular disease and diabetes or diabetes, high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol and high triglyceride levels.

Ways to prevent obesity

  • Regular exercise can prevent obesity
  • Stop eating different types of fast food and eat vegetables and healthy food
  • Body weight should always be kept in proper proportion
  • Food should be taken regularly at the right time
  • Tempting foods should be avoided.

Eating the right amount of food and exercising is the primary treatment for reducing obesity. Dietary restriction and lack of exercise may also be used in addition to obesity medications, such as medications that greatly reduce appetite or inhibit the rate of metabolism of substances such as fat. For those who are relatively overweight or obese, surgical treatment can be taken.

Apart from the health effects, obesity causes several other problems such as difficulty in employment. and rising business costs. Its impact is felt at all levels of society, private, corporate, governmental. Obesity prevention programs are seen to reduce medical costs of obesity-related diseases. However, people with higher incomes have to bear more medical expenses. The researchers therefore concluded that reducing obesity could improve public health, but otherwise reduce overall medical costs.

Eat sweets, desserts, and creamy foods as little as possible. No more than a spoonful of sugar when drinking tea. Avoid polao, biryani, mughlai, kebabs. 

Practise brisk walking for 30 minutes every day. Apart from this, do some manual labour whenever possible. Walking 10,000 steps at the end of the day is good.
