In another step forward, researchers at Yale faculty of medicine have determined that neurons, the brain’s number one conversation cells, can store and use their personal sugar-based total energy reserves, challenging lengthy-status beliefs.

Previously, it was assumed that glial cells were totally responsible for storing glycogen, a sugar used as brain fuel. However, the brand new studies suggest neurons themselves act like “hybrid engines,” ready with emergency backup electricity systems.

Using fluorescent sensors and research on microscopic worms (C. elegans), researchers found that in pressure or oxygen scarcity, neurons activate those glycogen stores to maintain brain function while mitochondria – the cell’s major electricity supply – are compromised.
