Gaza launched the polio vaccination campaign targeted by 600,000 children

The campaign was carried out in collaboration with the Gaza Health Ministry, World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF ), and the United Nations Agency for the Palestinian Refugee (UNRWA), wrote.com wrote.

In a statement, UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini said “Another major vaccination campaign against polio began on Saturday.” “Like the past and our partners, we aim to reach nearly 600,000 children under the age of 10 in the entire Gaza strip,” Lazzarini said. He said “Over 1,700 UNRWA team members will participate in this campaign at our health centers and mobile points.”

The ministry announced the launch of the campaign earlier this week, citing polio resurrection concerns after traces of the virus were found in sewage systems. It says vaccination lasts three days, with the possibility of an extension of two more days when needed. In August 2024, the Gaza Ministry of Health confirmed the first polio case in the territory to a 10-month child.

The discovery motivated the first vaccination campaign in the middle of the Israeli race war in Gaza, which was conducted in two stages beginning in September. According to WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyus, the first phase, completed on September 12, more than 560,000 Palestinian children were vaccinated.

The second stage ended on November 7, vaccinating 556,774 children under 10 years of age throughout the Gaza Strip. The UN said children in Gaza need two doses of oral polio vaccine for adequate protection. The outbreak of polio impacted on January 19.
