An 82-year-old man was reported to have contracted the Zika virus, with 33 cases recorded.

Pune.  An 82-year-old resident of Indranagar in Dahanukar Colony in Kothrudi has been confirmed as the latest case of Zika virus infection in the city.   This brings the number of confirmed Zika cases in the city to 33 so far.

The said old man was suffering from fever since last July 15.  He was shifted to a private hospital on July 18.  He remains hospitalized and is currently in stable condition.

Of the 33 confirmed cases, four are still hospitalized and undergoing treatment.   All the four people admitted to the hospital are elderly.

Till Monday, the civic body has inspected more than 31,000 houses, of which 917 were infested with mosquito larvae and eggs.

In total, 3,795 pregnant women were registered in hospitals in the outbreak area. Zika virus was found in 306 of them.Currently, 11 of the total confirmed cases in Pune are pregnant women. Zika virus infection during pregnancy is associated with a birth defect known as microcephaly.

The total number of Zika virus cases in the state reached 38 on Monday. Apart from the 33 cases reported from Pune city, there are two cases from Pune village, one from Kolhapur city and three from Ahmednagar. Zika virus was found in the blood plasma and cerebrospinal fluid of a 61-year-old man. Neurological complications were confirmed in the National Institute of Virology report.
